Knowledgehook.com

Introduction

For teachers who are familiar with Kahoot, the concept of Knowledgehook (knowledgehook.com) will be familiar but it is focussed specifically on Mathematics and has some other functional differences.

There is also a second introductory-type video which I'm unable to embed in this article at: https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/tvdsb-aims-to-improve-math-achievement-with-engaging-gamifying-software-678017853.html

Purpose

The Knowledgehook activities are ideal as a hook at the start of a lesson or as a quick and fun assessment for learning at the end of a lesson.

Relevance

The Knowledgehook gameshows are similar to the Kahoot quizes but they can contain more interactivity to help in developing understanding (Assessment as learning). In addition, there are some predefined questions on the site which are tied to the Ontario curriculum so you can find questions that are immediately relevant to the part of the curriculum you're teaching. You can also create your own questions as you would expect.

In addition to the quiz format of the Gameshows, you can also prepare missions. Missions are learning exercises that allow students to proceed through materials at their own pace. As it's on-line they can complete the missions whenever they have time (in-class or at home). The system is designed to track students' performance individually so the teacher gets a clear understanding of where the student is in learning the material and it provides materials and strategies for addressing issues that are arising in the students learning of the maerial.

I have so far only experimented with the Gameshow format of this resource.

Positives

What I liked about it was the link to the math curriculum. The curriculum-aligned content makes it easy to find quiz questions that were immediately applicable to the curriculum materials I was developing a lesson plan around.

Negatives/Limitations

The number of pre-defined questions was fairly limited but they would be sufficient for determining student's current understanding of material before starting a new section or for an exit ticket to use as an assessment for learning.

Reliability

Knowledge hook has been adoped by several school boards including (Toronto District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, Dufferin Peel Catholic School Board, and others which gives me a high degree of confidence in it's materials.
