Understanding that division is the opposite of multiplication

It doesn't seem to be intuitively obvious to students learning to divide that division is simply the opposite of multiplication. Without this knowledge, the work becomes harder and again it will have a negative impact on their ability to recognized patterns and work with numbers in general.

When you're learning the 9 times table

If you're not comfortable with the 9 times tables (2-9), there are a couple of methods for helping you to figure them out or double check them but I like using the following method.

  1. All nine times tables will be two digits other than 1x9 which most people can remember.
  2. The first digit is one less than the smaller digit. Example, 4x9, the first digit is 3.
  3. The sum of the two digits of the product will be nine so 9 minus the first digit will give you the second digit. Example, 9-3 so the second digit is 6.
  4. Put them together, you get 36.
